Livelihood Assistance in Sitio Biong, Brgy. Osmena, Culion, Palawan

Posting Date

Mr. Jimboy Dacullos, 38 years old, is a fisherman. He, his wife Rosita and their four children live in the island sitio of Biong, part of Brgy. Osmena, Culion, Palawan. Living in the small island, Jimboy had a firsthand encounter of the strength of super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, when it struck them in the night of November 8, 2013. The super typhoon thankfully passed over after an hour, but it had left a wreck in its path.

Jimboy's family, one of the 53 families occupying the island, lost their fishnet during the typhoon. Fortunately, they had been able to safekeep their boat which was not damaged. Jimboy is an active member of the Tagbanua association in Biong, and was one of those who assisted in the distribution of the goods, working together with the other men in their small community to arrange the fishnets and accessories.

The assistance to re-establish their livelihood, through the assistance of Christian Aid and ACT Alliance, and the facilitation of Samdhana Institute, was a timely opportunity. Many of the fishermen had been unable to effectively get a good catch out on sea without their fishnets. During the immediate days after the super typhoon, the men had to resort to collecting shells and 'balat' or sea cucumber when they could not get out to fish.

Twenty-one families opted to receive fishnets and accessories for the livelihood assistance. Some of these families had motorized boats but only had a hook and line to use, and no fishnets. Some of the families, anticipating that they will be able to increase their catch, aim to produce dried fish. During the consultations and meetings, it was also agreed with their association that they will come up with a stricter policy to avoid overfishing. ###
