Biography

Denise is one of the Philippines’ foremost young women scientists and sustainability leaders, widely recognized for her pioneering work at the nexus of climate change, biodiversity, and community resilience. With a background in biology and sustainability science, she has dedicated her career to advancing ecosystem-based adaptation strategies that are both scientifically sound and socially inclusive. Her approach emphasizes empowering resource-dependent communities, especially Indigenous Peoples and local populations, to navigate climate risks through ethical, participatory processes. Her commitment has earned her national and international acclaim, including the prestigious Planet Earth Award from the Alliance for World Scientists, which honors exceptional contributions to sustaining life on Earth.

Currently a professor of ecosystem-based transformation management in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, Denise is also the university’s focal point to IPBES, serving as a Lead Author and liaison for Indigenous and Local Knowledge in the IPBES Nexus Assessment. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Manila Observatory’s Klima Climate Change Center and sits on the Selection Committee for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s International Climate Protection Fellowship. What distinguishes Denise is her rare ability to blend scientific excellence with deep community engagement and academic service.
