Description

Indigenous Peoples Rights and Climate Change in a Digital Era" is happening 9th-11th August 2025 in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia.

The climate emergency is happening now. Indigenous peoples and resource-dependent communities continue to bear the worst – especially in the failure of agriculture and loss of livelihood. International attention is focused on climate financing, and various models of carbon marketing, and biodiversity credits. But will these be an opportunity or a threat for Indigenous Peoples? Existing issues that block IPs' access to equitable funding is still a heavy debate on who benefits from complicated climate financing models. Another aspect is that digitalization and artificial intelligence or AI is being offered as green solutions to the climate crisis, yet, do they really serve this purpose?

These intersecting issues are the current context in SouthEast Asia region and provide an impetus for convening communities, organizations and civil society to discuss these concerns that we all face, through the 2nd Regional Forum 2025.

Asia is home to around 300 million Indigenous Peoples, and they share common challenges across the region, and also have very distinct country contexts. In Myanmar, there are issues on citizenship and government recognition, while in the Philippines, the implementation of the IP Rights Act continues to suffer from inconsistencies.

Indigenous Peoples are already doing a great part in protecting the forests, coastal and marine areas, and key ecosystems, and they need support that will add value to their protection efforts. International financing that goes direct to Indigenous Peoples is still a very small percentage from the public and philanthropy institutions. The effort to create a solidarity fund for Indigenous Peoples in Asia is creating a concrete mechanism to bring support to IPs directly.

These key points will shape the coming conversations in the Regional Forum.
